Dominican Republic chairs key global competition event

Geneva, Switzerland.- María Elena Vásquez Taveras, President of the Board of Directors of the National Commission for the Defense of Competition (Procompetencia), chaired the 22nd Session of the Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Development and Competition Policy in Geneva, Switzerland. This marked the Dominican Republic’s inaugural leadership of the event, organized annually by UNCTAD to discuss competition law and policy.

During the session, Vásquez Taveras emphasized the critical role of competition law in driving economic and social development, stressing its importance in fostering fair markets, encouraging innovation, and protecting consumers. She highlighted UNCTAD’s invaluable support in enhancing institutional capacities and promoting effective competition policies across developing nations.

Under her stewardship, the Dominican Republic hosted significant events including the XI Meeting of the Working Group on Trade and Competition in Latin America and the Caribbean, alongside initiatives like “Competition Week” aimed at strengthening international collaboration and expertise within the country. The session concluded with unanimous approval of resolutions, acknowledging Vásquez Taveras’s exemplary leadership.

Her efforts garnered praise and expressions of interest in future collaborations during protocol meetings held in Switzerland, underscoring Procompetencia’s commitment to advancing competition policy on a global scale.
