Dominican Republic partners with World Economic Forum to tackle plastic pollution

New York.- The Minister of Industry, Commerce, and MSMEs (MICM) of the Dominican Republic, Víctor Bisonó, signed a memorandum of understanding with the World Economic Forum to develop the National Plastic Action Platform (NPAP) in the Dominican Republic. The signing ceremony took place at the Forum’s offices in New York, with key participants from the World Economic Forum’s Latin American and Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) teams.

The agreement formalizes the collaboration aimed at reducing plastic pollution and promoting a circular economy in the Dominican Republic. Minister Bisonó highlighted that this initiative, supported by President Luis Abinader, is a significant step toward creating an environmentally sustainable and economically balanced future. The partnership will focus on implementing strategies to optimize plastic use, reduce waste, and promote recycling and responsible production and consumption models.

A high-level meeting followed the signing, involving both Dominican public and private sector leaders, including representatives from major plastic companies. Discussions centered on creating a roadmap to reduce plastic pollution, conducting a comprehensive diagnosis of the current situation, and ensuring private sector compliance with the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework. The collaboration reinforces the Dominican government’s commitment to sustainable development and enhancing industrial competitiveness while addressing global environmental challenges.
