UN condemns armed violence and massacre of over 180 in Haiti

New York.- UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the brutal massacre of at least 184 people, including 127 elderly individuals, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, from December 6 to 8. The atrocity, carried out by the gang led by Micanor Altès, alias Wa Mikano, stemmed from accusations of witchcraft after the gang leader’s son fell ill and later died. Victims were killed with knives and machetes in the Wharf Jérémie area of Cité Soleil.

Guterres expressed condolences to the victims’ families and urged Haitian authorities to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice. He also called on UN member states to provide security, financial, and logistical support to the Haitian police, emphasizing the need to accelerate political transition efforts.

Haiti’s Prime Minister’s Office condemned the massacre as an “absolute atrocity” and vowed to mobilize state forces to pursue and dismantle the criminal group. Promising rigorous justice, the government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring such crimes do not go unpunished.
