Storms threaten flight cancellations in major tourist source for Dominican Republic

United States.- Severe storms across the western and southern United States are threatening significant flight delays as millions of travelers head out for the year-end holidays. On December 28, the South is expected to face strong tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail, particularly from Louisiana to Alabama, while the West will experience heavy snow and strong winds due to Pacific storm systems.

Flight cancellations have already begun, with nearly 800 flights canceled on Thursday and more than 50 on Friday, according to FlightAware. The Storm Prediction Center warns of severe storms in the central Gulf Coast and central Mississippi and Alabama on December 27, including the possibility of tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has activated emergency resources as severe weather moves through the state, and travelers are urged to monitor road conditions. Meanwhile, a sinkhole in New Jersey has disrupted traffic on Interstate 80, adding to the travel challenges. With 119.3 million travelers expected to hit the roads and skies, the Transportation Security Administration anticipates a 6% increase in passengers compared to last year, with the busiest days being December 27 and 30.
