Kenya assures Haiti mission funding despite U.S. freeze

Kenya, (EFE).- Kenyan government spokesman Isaac Mwaura stated that the U.S. freeze on funding for the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti will not disrupt its operations, as the mission has sufficient resources to continue until September 2025. Mwaura clarified that while US$15 million in U.S. funds has been temporarily withheld, the mission remains financially stable, backed by the UN Trust Fund for Haiti and contributions from multiple countries, including Canada, France, and Spain.

Despite the funding suspension ordered by the Trump administration, which has paused U.S. humanitarian aid for 90 days, Kenya and its partners remain committed to transitioning the MSS into a fully UN-led operation. President William Ruto previously stated that the new U.S. administration supported Kenya’s efforts in Haiti, but the recent freeze contrasts with that position. The UN Security Council had authorized the mission in October 2023 to support Haiti’s police in combating gang violence, which resulted in over 5,600 deaths in 2024 alone.
