Haitian-Dominicans to demand IDs at National Palace again

Santo Domingo. -The movement "ReconocisoRD" returned to protest outside the National Palace at 10am Monday to demand that president Danilo Medina "break the silence" on the strife of Dominicans of Haitian descent on August 16, which marks his first year in office.

The movement’s demands for documents to obtain a Dominican ID (cedula) prompted the Chamber of Deputies to name a commission to probe the situation in the Central Electoral Board, which has pitted its president Roberto Rosario against members Jose Aquino and Eddy Olivares.

The lower Chamber last week decided to create the special commission of eight deputies to investigate the status of the more than 22,000 Dominicans of Haitian origin who were allegedly stripped of their cedula.
