Contraband champagne and whisky detected at Dominican port

SantoDomingo.- A consignment of several brands of champagne and whisky was discoveredyesterday at the Caucedo Multimodal Port in Boca Chica, after being collectedby the import company that brought it to the country in a double-basedcontainer.

The contraband was detectedby anti-narcotics and customs agents when the container was put through theX-ray scanner at the port.

National Drug ControlDepartment (DNCD) chief, Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo made his way to thescene when it was originally suspected that the container was loaded withnarcotics.

Rosado Mateo nonetheless asked Forensic Science Institute (Inacif) inspectors totake samples from the container and examine them for possible traces of drugs.

The company involved has notbeen named, but a source told the media that the drinks had been sent fromPanama. The cargo will be held by Customs until the laboratory test results arereceived.
