Alix Didier Fils-Aimé sworn in as Haiti’s new Prime Minister
Haiti.- Businessman Alix Didier Fils-Aimé was sworn in as Haiti’s new prime minister on Monday, following the dismissal of his predecessor, Garry Conille, by the transitional presidential council. In his first speech, Fils-Aimé, 52, pledged to prioritize “peace” and “security” in the face of rampant gang violence and instability that has plagued Haiti. He emphasized that restoring security is the key to a successful transition for the Haitian people, who deserve peace, stability, and sustainable development.
The transitional presidential council, a nine-member body established in April by political and civil society groups, dismissed Conille after conflicts over control of the government, particularly over ministerial appointments. Conille, a former prime minister, resisted his removal, arguing that only a parliamentary body—which Haiti currently lacks—could oust him. The ongoing power struggle comes as gangs control 85% of Port-au-Prince and key highways, with recent attacks targeting major infrastructure.
