EU urges Haitian authorities to end violence and hold elections
Haiti.- The European Union has urged Haiti’s government and political factions to act swiftly and decisively to curb the escalating violence and organize “free and fair” elections. This statement follows businessman Alix Didier Fils-Aimé’s recent appointment as Prime Minister of Haiti. The EU expressed its willingness to assist Haiti in tackling its pressing issues, including rising violence, food insecurity, and the displacement of citizens.
Fils-Aimé assumed office amid heightened violence from criminal gangs in Port-au-Prince, which disrupted business and school activities. In response, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration suspended flights to Haiti for 30 days after shots were fired at three U.S. airline planes—American Airlines, Spirit, and JetBlue—at Toussaint Louverture Airport.
The EU emphasized the urgency of stabilizing the country to create an environment conducive to democratic processes and to support Haiti’s recovery from its current crisis.
The EU is blind. The Haitian authorities are incapable to end the violence. It is the reason the UN mission troops are there.
