Protests erupt in Bayahíbe over arrest of local Mayor and son
Bayahíbe, DR.- Bayahíbe is under heightened military and police presence following protests demanding the release of Enriquillo Brito, director of the District Board, and his son Enrique José Luis Brito. Both were arrested during Operation Panthera 7, linked to the December 2024 seizure of 9.8 tons of cocaine at the Caucedo port.
Since early Wednesday, protesters have staged a work stoppage, claiming the innocence of the Britos. Family members and community leaders, including Helen Brito, the mayor’s niece, and councillor Henry Ventura, have voiced strong support. Ventura announced a two-day suspension of tourist activities and raised the town hall flag as part of the protests, describing Brito as an honest individual caught in a misunderstanding.
The Britos, alongside five other defendants, face charges in connection with the drug operation led by the National Directorate of Drug Control (DNCD). While authorities urge calm, the community remains united and vigilant, awaiting clarity on the legal proceedings.
It may be reasonably surmised the protesters are lackeys of the Brito’s deprived of their sources of benefits because of the arrests.
