Solar panels on all Gov’t buildings aim to save US$50M annually

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s State-owned electric utility (CDEEE) installs solar panels to power all government buildings across the country, aimed at slashing at least US$50 million annually from the government’s light bill and cut greenhouse gas emissions to the environment.

The project designed by the CDEEE aims to provide all or part of the electricity demand of schools, hospitals, barracks, government offices and other institutions, which will have a higher energy supply at lower cost, with investment amortized over a maximum of three years.

The public sector consumed 780 gigawatt/hours of electricity in 2014, and paid around RD$7.5 billion, figures which reveal the project’s importance.
