Ministry replaces controversial 6th grade history book

Santo Domingo.- The Ministryof Education announced yesterday that it has decided to replace the sixth gradehistory book with a new version, following strong criticisms and accusations that it contained gaps and distortions, portrayed theDominican Republic as racist and xenophobic, and promoted the unification of the island.

In a press release, theministry informed that the replacement textbook would be sent to state schools around the country in the next fewdays.

Minister Carlos AmaranteBaret said that he had not ordered the criticized version to be reproduced inthis academic year 2015-2016. The ministry added that the DominicanAcademy of History is being invited to an advisory committee for the selection of new social studies textbooks.
