Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic is among five priority countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region, where there are strong urban-rural gaps and deep rural inequalities that generate hunger and poverty, through a program recently launched by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), denominated 100 Territories Free of Poverty and Hunger (100-T).
In Dominican Republic’s case, the program will focus on almost the entire border strip, from Pedernales, Independencia, Elías Piña to Bahoruco, Azua, Barahona (west) and El Seibo (east).
As in much of the territory of El Salvador, where it will be applied in more than half of the country, deep inequalities and poverty have been identified.
The five priority countries, identified by FAO, are the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala Colombia and Honduras.
