Scenic harbor a sanctuary for sailboats that ply the Caribbean

Puerto Plata.- Luperon is a scenic bay is located in the west of Puerto Plata province, where according to some accounts Christopher Columbus himself would seek refuge in the natural harbor, to save his fleet during one or several storms.

It’s considered, worldwide, as an important stopover for the nautical tourism for sailboats in the Caribbean region.

Dominican Republic is on the sailboat route between the United States and the Lesser Antilles.

According to the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, ECLAC, the country boasts seven facilities with about 880 berths for pleasure boats of any type.

St. Martin leads the region with 13 facilities and 1,020 berths.
