Bowing to pressure, Dominican Republic leader halts hotel in protected area

Santo Domingo.- President Danilo Medina, on Tue. ordered a halt to the  construction of a hotel in the protected area of Cotubanamá National Park (east) after mounting pressure by environmental and social groups against the project owned by Spanish mogul Pepe Hidalgo.

Presidency chief of staff, Gustavo Montalvo, said Medina will appoint a commission, which will be headed by himself, Environment Minister, Angel Estévez, and Executive Power legal consultant, Flavio Darío Espinal, to investigate the project and render a report to the Head of State.

No date was set for the commission to deliver its report on the planned hotel project located in the Guaraguao-Punta Catuano National Recreation Area.
