Presidential poll: ruling party candidate 49.2%; opposition 42.4%

SANTO DOMINGO. – If the elections were today ruling PLD party presidential candidate Danilo Medina would win with 49.2%, to 42.4% for his PRD rival, Hipólito Mejía.

Pollster Insight S.A. representative Jose Luis Rojo said the survey disclosed Monday shows that on May 20 the PLD can win in the first round with 50.7%, to Mejia’s 44%.

He said in the event of a second ballot, Medina would win with 51.7% of the votes, against Mejia’s 44.6%, with 3.7% of the eligible would not voters abstaining.

Insight says Mejia’s 44.2% rejection rate surpasses Medina’s 12.5%.

Other candidates

Rojo said Alliance Country candidate Guillermo Moreno would get 1.7% of the votes; Eduardo Estrella, of Dominicans for Change 1.3%, and Max Puig, of Alliance for Democracy 0.9%.

The survey also found that 33.3% of the eligible voters will not cast a ballot, while 2.3% are still undecided.

The poll conducted April 7 to 11 with 1,200 people has a margin of error of 2.9%.
