As the campaign is forgotten so are corruption charges

Santo Domingo.- Most of the complaints of alleged corruption and other criminal activity filed during the last election campaign have been discarted.

During that period citizens, politicians and civil society groups filed a complaint against senator Felix Bautista, former first lady Margarita Cedeño, and Diandino Peña, head of the construction of Santo Domingo’s subway lines, for alleged corruption in their posts.

Complaints were filed in the Anti-Corruption Dept. (DPCA), but were discarded on alleged lack of proof.

During the race for the Palace Dominican and Haiti authorities accused ex coronel Pedro Julio Goico (Pepe) of plotting against Michael Martelly. National District prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso investigated the case but couldn’t find solid evidence of conspiracy.

On August 13 DPCA director Hotoniel Bonilla discarded corruption allegations, in Haiti’s reconstruction against Bautista, Senator for San Juan province, filed by the campaign of opposition PRD party presidential candidate Hipólito Mejía

The Dominican Anti-Corruption Alliance also charged Bautista with irregularities in the use of more than RD$12.0 billion while heading the Government Works Supervisory Office, but it was also shelved.

Also discarded were the PRD charge of ballooned costs of subway cars for Lines 1 and 2 against Peña, and the corruption allegation by TV producer Marcos Martinez against ex first lady.
