Stressed young people suffer from hypertension

Dr. Claudia Almonte.

The pandemic has generated stress among citizens due to the confinement and the statistics of deaths and collateral diseases. Still, in the case of the Dominican Republic, there is a new youth with cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological problems generated by post-traumatic stress.

Recent acts of violence, which include multiple homicides and femicides, as well as robberies and other acts for which much express anguish, anxiety, and panic, cause high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks.

Cardiologist Claudia Almonte offers explanations, who says that “it is not of these days, after the pandemic we have observed that more hypertensive people are emerging, in fact, young patients in debut, more overweight, obesity, more alcohol intake, more fat. More elevated cholesterol and glycemia levels. In other words, more pre-diabetic or diabetic patients. “Violence generates stress, and the fact that last weekend at least seven people were killed in the country in a few hours, has repercussions on the health of the population that should be taken into account since there is a greater sensation of palpitations, arrhythmias, hypertension and of course cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks or cerebral thrombosis.

Almonte said that stress has long been considered a risk factor.
