Tragedies in Caipi and CONANI shock the country in less than 24 hours

An atmosphere of consternation, disappointment, and concern is what has been caused in Dominican society by the two recent tragedies involving a boy and a girl in separate events that occurred in a Center for Comprehensive Early Childhood Care (Caipi) and a shelter of the National Council for Children and Adolescents (CONANI).

The first and most regrettable case occurred last Friday afternoon after a child’s death was reported inside the Center for Integral Attention of Early Childhood (Caipi) facilities in San Francisco de Macoris.

On the other hand, it was not until yesterday that the National Council for Children and Adolescents (CONANI), reported that last Tuesday, a girl “fell” from the roof of one of its foster homes located in the National District.

Through a press release, CONANI, the entity responsible for the protection and promotion of children’s rights in the Dominican Republic, said that the child was doing sports activities in an enclosed space with nets and under the supervision of four adults, realizing some time later that the girl had fallen.

CONANI expressed that the girl, whose name has been withheld, has been under medical care since the moment she was attended to and transferred by a unit of the 9-1-1 Emergency System. It has been impossible to locate a sister with whom they have been able to communicate on other occasions.

Both cases have occurred in less than five days, which has provoked extensive criticism for the professional management that is being exercised from within the same.

Regarding the child’s death in Caipi, the first lady of the Republic, Raquel Arbaje, was one of the first to express her opinion, suggesting that the person responsible should be “severely punished.”

Meanwhile, CONANI has only issued the above-mentioned communiqué, without any other authority of this sector or the country making any statement so far.

It should be noted that since the resignation of the executive president of CONANI, Ana Cecilia Morum Solano, this entity has been without a head for a little less than a month.
