Guatemala asks the Dominican Republic for help on consumption scam

The Guatemalan Directorate of Attention and Consumer Assistance (Diaco) requested training on misleading advertising from its Dominican counterpart. Eddy Alcántara, executive director of the National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Pro Consumidor), explained that the request stems from the country’s success in implementing a new procedure to reduce claims for that concept to zero. Claudia Karina Donis Sáenz, acting director of Guatemala’s consumer protection agency, requested the training workshop in communication in which she expressed her interest in Pro Consumidor providing training to that entity from the Central American country about misleading advertising and how this issue can be effectively applied in favor of Guatemalan consumers.

Alcántara praised the Guatemalan Consumer Care and Assistance Agency and other nations for inviting the Dominican Republic to share its experiences and procedures, “which have yielded excellent results in defense of consumer rights,” through workshops.

He emphasized that since the implementation of this procedure in the country during the current Pro Consumidor administration, misleading advertising has been reduced to zero, attracting the attention of other countries in the region. “Due to the success achieved in this effort to combat irregularities in terms of misleading, abusive, or irresponsible advertising,” he explained.
