Dominican activist prevents feminist student societies from accepting transgender women

Following the approval of a feminist group that intended to impose the “only women” policy, feminist student groups will be permitted to exclude transgender women. According to the British newspaper The Telegraph, the feminist Women Talk Back (WTB) society from the University of Bristol in England organized meetings in which issues related to gender violence were discussed and in which trans women were excluded because attendees were afraid of expressing their intimacies in front of trans women, according to his argument. After such action, the Bristol Students’ Union (Bristol SU) called for the resignation of the Dominican Raquel Rosario Sánchez, who in February 2021 was serving as president of Women Talk Back (WTB), which led members of the club to initiate legal action against the union alleging that it had “denied their rights under the Equality Act, discriminated against the plaintiffs, subjected them to prejudice, treated them less favorably, harassed and victimized them”.

Sánchez is studying a doctoral program at the Center for Gender and Violence Research at the University of Bristol. “Through our experience, we have inspired the first recognition of single-sex partnerships as legal in academia. Our story is about young women using their voices to bring about positive change that benefits all students, regardless of gender,” WTB (@WomenTalk_Back) tweeted. According to Raquel Rosario’s website, she is a writer and researcher, specializing in sexist violence against girls and women.

In addition, also a journalist, she has written for international newspapers such as The Telegraph, Al Jazeera, Newsweek, and The Critic. Raquel also works in organizations for women in vulnerable conditions.
