Dominican Republic’s biggest land fraud case goes to Supreme Court

Santo Domingo.- The National District Prosecutor filed to appeal a ruling acquitting former Agrarian Institute (IAD) director Jaime Rodriguez Guzman, a brother and his wife of charges od defrauding the State out of thousands of hectares at Bahia de las Aguilas (southwest).

Yeni Berenice Reynoso asked the Supreme Court to revoke the June 4 ruling by 1st First Instance Court presiding judge Gisselle Mendez, who cited a statute of limitations.

She argued that the lower court ruling failed to indicate that the delays in the proceedings resulting in the expiration of the statute of limitations were caused by the defendants themselves.

The prosecution’s request is expected to be challenged by the defense of the accused in the country’s biggest ever land fraud case, which in addition to Rodriguez Guzman, figure his wife Reyna Margarita Martinez and his brother Rafael Rodriguez Guzman.
