UN says there’s too much violence against women in the country

GENEVA. – The UN Committee on the Elimination of Violence against Women on Monday denounced the high incidence of sexual and domestic violence against women in the Dominican Republic and urged the country to develop a national action plan to fight it.

The Committee aims to ensure that the member states of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Violence against Women, which include the Dominican Republic, end political, economic, social, cultural and civil discrimination against females.

In the previous report submitted to the Committee, the country admitted domestic violence had increased in the last five years, "despite the policy and institutional fabric-building process."

Dominican Republic also acknowledged that over the years femicide rate is still between 170 and 200 per a population of under 10 million people each year.
