The absence of rain in the basins that fill the main aqueducts that supply water to the capital has forced the Santo Domingo Water and Sewerage Corporation (Caasd) to establish a plan to rationalize the liquid that will imply changes in the number of days in which the service will be provided to the public. The daily production of water went from being 442.56 million gallons per day in January 2023 to 369.08 million gallons today, which means a decrease of 73.48 million gallons, for 16.6%. Engineer Luis Salcedo, from the CAASD Operations Area, announced that this institution has decided to “reschedule” the days on which water is distributed, which will reduce service time for many neighborhoods.
The changes will be informed through the neighborhood associations, apart from the fact that the CAASD will offer weekly bulletins. “We have to affect as few people as possible, so this redistribution implies that if a sector received three times a week and another received two, it would receive two” he added. He informed that the hours of service will be maintained on the days that are established already. The most affected will be those who receive water from the Duey and Isa-mana aqueducts, such as Los Alcarrizos, Pedro Brand, Pantoja, and Los Girasoles. Also, the residents of Herrera and part of the National District will be affected by the Haina aqueduct. From the Isabela aqueduct, it will touch Cuesta Hermosa, Cuesta Brava, Puerta de Hierro, Perantuén, El Totumo, Barrio 23 de Pantoja, and La Hondonada, among others.
Engineer Salcedo clarified that this does not mean that these sectors will not receive water, but there will be a reduction in pressure in the networks, so the high points of those sectors will be the first affected. Because it is the most stable water source in the capital, providing 35% of the supply, the CAASD will transfer water from the Valdesia dam aqueduct to the Isa-Mana and Duey aqueducts.
