The Dominican Republic currently has 17 large renewable energy plants under construction; six will enter operation before the beginning of next semester, and eight will enter by the end of this year, which guarantees that the country will meet the goal of covering 25% of the national demand with renewables by 2025. Edward Veras, executive director of the National Energy Commission (CNE), offered these data during the Latam Future Energy celebration.
Veras affirmed that the country is experiencing “the boom of renewables” because of many concessions and PPA contracts, indicating that “our system supports more renewables and that arbitration is understandable for a renewable power plant.”
He said the new ideas would allow the necessary energy transition, with “new hydropumping projects, hydrogen generation from clean sources, which will allow access to tax incentives for hydrogen generation.”
He explained that the country’s push for the development of clean energy sources requires a thorough analysis of the performance of the national energy system since it is mandatory to deliver more renewable energy with storage to the market.
