Santo Domingo.- In recent years, fentanyl has become a serious public health concern in many countries, particularly the United States. The potent synthetic opioid is often added to other drugs, such as heroin or cocaine, due to its extreme potency. Illicitly manufactured fentanyl is distributed in illegal drug markets and can be fatal even in small amounts. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that over 36,000 deaths involved synthetic opioids, including fentanyl, in the United States in 2019.
The use of fentanyl has been classified as an epidemic in some countries due to its high risk of overdose and death. It produces analgesia, drowsiness, nausea, intestinal muscular spasm, involuntary movements, hallucinations, confusion, delirium, coma, respiratory depression, and even death. Those under the influence of this drug may exhibit a “zombie” state due to its potent effects. Despite its risks, fentanyl is still used as a prescription medication for severe pain, under medical supervision.
The National Drug Council’s response to the claims of fentanyl circulation and use in the country aims to alleviate concerns and prevent panic. However, the potential threat of fentanyl entering the country’s illegal drug market remains, and authorities must remain vigilant in monitoring and preventing its distribution and use. With its extreme potency and associated risks, fentanyl use and abuse can have devastating consequences on individuals, families, and communities.
