Dominican ball player caught in the U.S. after 2 years on the lam

New York.- During the last two years former Dominican baseball player Wilson Alinson Peña, 33, who was released by a major league team, had become one of the most wanted fugitives of Interpol, and authorities in Massachusetts and in the Dominican justice.

Peña is charged with forming part of an international drug trafficking ring in the city of Lowell, Mass., and wanted in connection with a murder in Bani, a southern city in his country.

On Tuesday Peña ended his long flight when captured in Lowell, where he was taken into custody with bail set at US$250,000.

Prosecutors say Peña is a suspect in a homicide in the Dominican Republic, possibly linked to international drug trafficking. He pleaded not guilty to charges of drug trafficking and traffic violations.

Newspaper Lowell Sun reported that Peña was arrested after he fled from police in Lowell, where he was being sought after the authorities were tipped off about his link to drug trafficking.

When tried to flee, Peña crashed the vehicle into a fence at a Lawrence home and when the car was searched officers found 103 bags of heroin and five of cocaine inside the car.
