New York-Dominican lawmakers back Thompson for mayor, Efe reports

New York. – New York State and City representatives of the Dominican community on Tuesday endorsed former New York City official Bill Thompson’s bid for mayor, in the Democratic Party primaries, EFE reports.

State Sen. Adriano Espaillat, Assemblywoman Gabriela Rosa and Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez announced their support for Thompson, who a recent The Wall Street Journal poll ranked third among hopefuls with 13%, behind former Congressman Anthony Weiner (25%) and Council president Christine Quinn (20%).

Espaillat, Rosa and Rodriguez met with all Democratic mayoral candidates over the weekend, after which decided to support Thompson for his commitment to education, affordable housing for Upper Manhattan and pledges to appoint Hispanics in various posts if he becomes mayor.

"He’s the most committed to include Latinos in his agenda, to have them in his campaign and administration," Rodriguez told EFE. "It’s important to recognize the percentage of Latinos in this city, where we are 28% of the population, with 33% whites and 28% African Americans."
