No end to opposition party’s strife; troops to guard meeting(Update)

Santo Domingo.- The Interior and Police minister affirmed Tuesday that that the military and police agents assigned to the security details of former president Hipolito Mejia and the president of Dominican Republic’s major opposition party (PRD), Miguel Vargas will be ordered to their barracks, once the controversial meeting of the political organization’s National Executive Committee (CEN) is announced.

Jose Ramon Fadul also announced that law enforcement agencies will ensure safety and order around the CEN meeting, but noted however, that the agents will only observe, but not who enters or leaves the activity.

The official, who affirmed that more than 500 police and military will be quartered, also revealed that around 200 retired generals support Mejia and Vargas politically.
