Canada.- On Monday, the Canadian Government made an announcement regarding the evacuation of select citizens from Haiti to the Dominican Republic due to the escalating situation and violence in the Caribbean nation.
Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly, during a press conference, outlined that the evacuation would initially target “vulnerable Canadians,” including those facing medical issues, and possessing valid passports.
Joly further mentioned that collaborative efforts are underway with other nations to explore alternative options for individuals not falling within the specified category.
Evacuated Canadians will have the opportunity to return to Canada from the Dominican Republic using their own means of transportation.
As per records from the Canadian Embassy in Haiti, approximately 3,000 Canadians are registered, with 245 individuals having reached out to Canadian authorities following the closure of Port-au-Prince’s international airport due to gang-related violence.
Due to the severe deterioration of security conditions in Haiti, Canada had previously evacuated a significant portion of its diplomatic personnel on March 14. Currently, only “essential workers” remain stationed at the Canadian embassy.
