Attorney Germán Brito’s emphasis on Intellectual Property’s role in societal development

Santo Domingo.- The Attorney General of the Republic, Judge Miriam German Brito, emphasized the significance of Intellectual Property protection in contemporary society during the commemoration of World Intellectual Property Day.

Speaking at the conference titled “Video Games, Cinema, Cosmetology, and Procedures in the Justice System from the Perspective of Intellectual Property Protection,” held at the Supreme Court of Justice Auditorium on April 26, German Brito underscored Intellectual Property as not merely a legal concept but a crucial catalyst for economic and cultural advancement. She elaborated that it safeguards creations of the mind, encompassing inventions, literary and artistic works, as well as commercial symbols, names, and images.

German Brito commended the Public Ministry’s commitment, particularly its Intellectual Property Unit, in rigorously pursuing crimes that undermine individual creativity, public health, and societal well-being. She acknowledged the pioneering work of Judge Army Ferreira, formerly in charge of the unit, now serving in the Constitutional Court.

While celebrating the removal of the Dominican Republic from the Watch List by the Office of the United States Trade Representative, citing progress in property enforcement and transparency concerns, German Brito stressed the necessity of continual regulatory enhancement to align with regional and global best practices.

Highlighting Intellectual Property’s economic relevance, German Brito emphasized its role in attracting investments and fostering a conducive business environment. She also emphasized efforts to safeguard pharmaceutical and medical innovations, crucial for ensuring product quality and public health.

Addressing the challenges faced by the film and video game industries in navigating copyright issues, German Brito emphasized the importance of understanding these intricacies to combat piracy and counterfeiting effectively. Efforts to train prosecutors and enhance inter-institutional cooperation were highlighted as crucial steps in this regard.

The conference featured sessions on various topics, including Creative Industries, Cosmetology, and Intellectual Property’s role in Sustainable Development Goals, with industry experts providing insights and expertise to prosecutors and Public Ministry staff in attendance.
