Weather Alert: heavy rain and thunderstorms expected in several provinces

Santo Domingo.- The National Meteorological Office (Onamet) has issued a weather alert for several provinces in the Dominican Republic. According to their report, the morning hours will be affected by the instability of a trough and the effects of humidity from a low-pressure system located in the southwest of the country. As a result, moderate to heavy precipitation, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are predicted.

  • Pedernales
  • Barahona
  • San Juan
  • Azua
  • Peravia
  • San José de Ocoa
  • San Cristóbal
  • El Gran
  • Santo Domingo
  • National District

These weather conditions are expected to extend from the Caribbean coast to the Central Mountains, north, and northeast during the afternoon and night. Residents in these areas should be prepared for significant rainfall, which could lead to urban or rural flooding, overflowing rivers, streams, and landslides.

Onamet maintains the meteorological alert level for these 11 provinces due to the expected rainfall over the next 24 to 48 hours. The risk includes possible flooding of rivers, streams, and ravines, as well as urban flooding and landslides.

For Thursday, Onamet predicts continued humidity and instability. Rainfall is expected from the early morning, varying in intensity from normal to moderate, and even locally torrential. Thunderstorms and gusty winds will affect different provinces in the southwest, southeast, and northeast during morning and afternoon hours. These conditions will extend to the Central Mountain Range, Cibao Valley, and northern regions.
