Labor Minister: Government committed to consensus-based social security reform

Santo Domingo.- Minister of Labor Luis Miguel De Camps García has declared that the government’s goal is to achieve a consensus-based reform of the Social Security system. He emphasized that the reform should improve the conditions for affiliates, be financially sustainable and positively impact the financial well-being of families.

“We expect to strengthen the solidarity pillar of pensions, implement primary care, provide greater health coverage for retirees, extend coverage age for children and include parents in the core family unit of the primary affiliate,” said Minister De Camps.

De Camps made these remarks at the Industrial Meeting on the Current Situation of the Social Security System organized by the Association of Industries of the Dominican Republic (AIRD), where he presented “The Social Security that the Dominican Republic Deserves: Challenges and Responsibilities of All.”

During the event, the minister highlighted the achievements in social security under President Luis Abinader’s administration, including the reduction of the age requirement from 45 to 44 years for the return of funds from the Health Late Entry Capitalization Account and the transfer of the Individual Capitalization Account to the Pay-As-You-Go System. He also noted the reinstatement of pensions for public employees after 20 years of demands.

De Camps also pointed out that more than 50,000 solidarity pensions have benefited families in vulnerable conditions, alongside expanded coverage of the Family Health Insurance to include kidney transplants, breast reconstruction due to cancer, pre-donor evaluation coverage, and risk-reduction mastectomy, among other benefits.

The event was attended by Edward Guzmán, General Manager of the National Social Security Council; Julio Brache, President of AIRD; Henry Sadhalá; Jesús Feris Iglesias, Superintendent of SISALRIL; and Francisco Torres, Superintendent of SIPEN.
