Dominican authorities confirm extradition of American Gilbert Reyes to Honduras

Santo Domingo.- Dominican authorities have confirmed the extradition of American citizen Gilbert Reyes to Honduras, where he is accused of the January murder of three women on the island of Roatan in the Honduran Caribbean. This information was reported by official sources in Tegucigalpa on Tuesday.

“We received information from Interpol Dominican Republic that the extradition decree for Gilbert Reyes has been duly signed,” said Honduran Secretary of Security Gustavo Sánchez on the social network X. He noted that the decree would be sent through diplomatic channels to the Honduran Ministry of Foreign Affairs to finalize the agreement.

Honduran Attorney General Johel Zelaya announced on June 25 that Dominican authorities had agreed to grant Reyes’ extradition. The trial was delayed when Reyes’ defense requested a suspension on July 3, citing concerns over the vulnerability of the Honduran prison system and his personal safety.

In response, Ramiro Muñoz, director of the Military Police of Public Order (PMOP) responsible for the penitentiary system, assured that the security of the accused would be guaranteed at the penal center upon his extradition.

Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina thanked the Dominican Republic for processing the extradition request in accordance with the law. He added that the process is being coordinated with the Honduran Embassy in Santo Domingo.

Attorney General Zelaya emphasized the collaborative efforts to ensure Reyes faces Honduran justice for the murders of his compatriots in Roatan. “We will follow diplomatic communications between the Foreign Ministries of Honduras and the Dominican Republic to complete the extradition process. As Attorney General, I am committed to honoring the memory of the victims,” Zelaya added.

Gilbert Reyes is the prime suspect in the violent deaths of three women, including his ex-partner, on Roatan. He fled Honduras for the United States before the bodies were discovered on January 9 inside a vehicle in a parking lot.

Reyes was arrested in late March by Dominican authorities at Las Americas International Airport (AILA) while attempting to travel to Miami after a two-week stay in the Dominican Republic.
