Abinader vows to uphold Constitution in second term

Santo Domingo.- President Luis Abinader has vowed to uphold the Constitution and laws of the Dominican Republic throughout his second term, which begins on August 16. He emphasized his commitment to strengthening institutions and maintaining democratic values.

“I will defend the Constitution and laws every day to ensure that our country continues to grow more democratic and beneficial for all,” Abinader stated.

He also plans to address constitutional reforms, including securing the current terms for presidential reelection and establishing an independent Public Ministry. While these proposals were expected to be discussed before August 16, no official details have been released.

Abinader made these remarks during a ceremony where he received a resolution from the National Assembly confirming his re-election. He expressed gratitude for the formality, highlighting its importance in reinforcing democratic principles. “This ceremony is a crucial act of democracy, showcasing the fulfillment of our Constitution and the role of the opposition,” he noted.

The resolution was presented by National Assembly President Ricardo de los Santos and a bicameral commission of 20 legislators.
