Activists protest against denationalization of Haitian descendants
Santo Domingo.- Activists from the Recognized Movement staged a peaceful protest in front of the National Palace yesterday, urging President Luis Abinader to end the “denationalization of Haitian descendants” resulting from ruling 168-13 from 2013 and the Neutralization Law 169-14.
Under the slogan “If we are not Dominican, neither is Abinader,” the protesters displayed banners stating “Enough racism” and “We are Dominicans and we have rights.” They called for the recognition of the social, economic, and political rights of individuals they believe are of Haitian descent, as well as the restoration of nationality for all denationalized individuals born between 1929 and 2010.
Elena Lorac, a spokesperson for the movement, emphasized the need for President Abinader to return to legality and restore the nationality of hundreds of thousands of Dominicans of Haitian descent born in the country. She highlighted ongoing discrimination and arbitrary detentions faced by young people in the community, who are targeted based on their physical appearance, regardless of their valid identification documents.
The movement’s press release stressed that the Haitian-descendant community significantly contributes to the country’s economic, social, and cultural development. They called on national and international social and political organizations advocating against statelessness to support their cause.
