Protesters gather outside Congress against Tax Reform

Santo Domingo.- Dozens gathered in front of the National Congress on Thursday to protest the proposed tax reform, which they believe unfairly targets the middle class. Led by Fernando Abreu from the Patria Libre movement, demonstrators argued that the government continually burdens the middle class with taxes while sparing the wealthy due to their limited numbers. Abreu emphasized that taxing the rich alone would not cover public spending, leading to repeated pressure on the middle class.

Protesters displayed banners, balloons, and flags, while police maintained order. The tax reform proposal, submitted to the Chamber of Deputies, has sparked concern across various sectors. The reform seeks to eliminate advance payments for individuals and micro-enterprises, introduce salary increases, and impose a single 18% VAT rate, exempting basic products like bread and rice. Other measures include a 100% increase in the vehicle circulation tax and changes to taxes on alcoholic and sugary beverages based on alcohol and sugar content.

If approved, the reform would also eliminate tax exemptions for specific goods and services, adding further pressure on taxpayers.
