Official: 1 dead at notorious prison as major ruckus averted

Santo Domingo.-Justice minister Francisco Dominguez on Sunday revealed that the transfer of inmates,which unleashed a riot at the La Victoria penitentiary last Friday with onedead and at least six hurt, was carried out to avert a showdown internally whichhe affirms could’ve led to unpredictable consequences.

He said theintelligence service was aware that two rival groups were preparing for a brawlfor control of the prison, for which the authorities proceeded to quickly transferthe two ringleaders, which led to the riot.

Dominguez said the turmoil was qwelled that same Friday and the penitentiary is currently in totalcalm.
