Dominican Republic populist tradition: A box of food for the poor

Santo Domingo.- Former presidentLeonel Fernandez tomorrow Wednesday will hand out baskets with food to poorpeople, in a populist tradition attributed to the late president JoaquinBalaguer.

Ruling party seniorleader Nicolas Calderon said the baskets will be handed out to celebrateChristmas Eve in front of the PLD Presidential Office in the university sector starting10am.

Fernandez´s donations tothe needy include staples to prepare a Christmas dinner in addition to rum,wine, punch, candies and nuts.

The former presidenthas distributed more than 70,000 boxes of food for poor people, through PLD leadersnationwide.
