Santiago.- Monday’s reopening of the Dominican consulate in the Haiti town of Ouanaminthe is good news for people on both sides of the north region border, shuttered in response to attacks by Haitian mobs, in reprisal for alleged mistreatment of Haitian migrants in the Dominican Republic.
The closing of the consulate hindered legal trafficking and trade between the two countries, for which its reopening is welcomed by all sectors.
Despite the closure of the consulate in Ouanaminthe contacts between officials of both countries continued, and recently p[aved the way for the Dominican consul to secure the release of a Dominican truck driver held in Haiti after a fatal collision.
Foreign minister Andrés Navarro met with officials and representatives of various sectors in Dajabón last weekend to deal with the situation in the area amid tense Dominican-Haitian ties.
Various people quoted by listin.com.do on both sides of the border agree on the need to reopen the consulate and expect the difficulties will subside, after assurances by Haiti’s government.
Commerce was normal in Dajabón’s binational market held Fridays and Mondays
On Sunday the Foreign Ministry announced the return of the Dominican ambassador to Port-au-Prince on Monday afternoon, while the consulates in Haiti’s capital, Cap Haitien, Belladere, Anse-a-Pitre and Ouanaminthe would reopen today with a normal schedule.
