Santo Domingo.- Haitian ambassador Daniel Supplice on Saturday admitted that his government did little to help thousands of his undocumented countrymen in the Dominican Republic, who failed to register for Dominican Republic’s program to regularize foreigners (PNRE).
"We’re responsible for what happens to our countrymen today," the Haitian diplomat said in an interview by Haitian newspaper Le Nouvelliste.
Supplice called a failure Identification Program Immigrant Haiti (PIDIH), carried out by Haiti authorities in the Dominican Republic.
"If we failed to identify our citizens at home, I do not see how we could’ve done so abroad," he said.
He also criticized that Haiti’s lack of willingness to document its nationals has condemned thousands of citizens who haven’t had the necessary documents on time to enroll in the Dominican government’s regularization process. "The fact is that we couldn’t give our citizens the opportunity to enroll in the plan of regularization."
Faced with the regularization program’s reality, the Haitian diplomat visited Presidency chief of staff Gustavo Montalvo in an effort to get the Dominican government to allow more Haitians to register.
