Santo Domingo.- After Tuesday´s apology by Organization ofAmerican States (OAS) Secretary General Luis Almagro, to the Dominican Republicfor the entity´s validation of the military occupation of 1965, some people say it settled a debtwhile for others didn’t go far enough.
Constitutional Court Chiefjustice Milton Ray Guevara said although better late than never, an apology isnot enough. "Delayed, but still, it must be impartial and independent andnot be condemning the Dominican Republic without seeing the reality of thesepeople."
Interior and Policeminister Jose Ramon Fadul called Almagro´s statement an act of reflection andmea culpa. "Not only acknowledged the OAS´s pending debt with theDominican Republic, with us in the country, but also to the whole world."
Meanwhile independentdeputy Minou Tavarez Mirabal called Almagro´s words an act of redress that wasnecessary. "The timing in which he´s done so seems important to me, it´s adebt the OAS has with the Dominican people and their sovereignty."
