Santo Domingo.- Even though Hillary Clinton won big in the Dominican Republic, where she earned 87 percent of the vote, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders won 69 percent of the vote in the Democrats Abroad primary, the official Democratic Party arm for American expats.
The Democrats Abroad primary allows U.S. citizens across the globe to cast ballots in the presidential nominating contest, with 13 delegates up for grabs, nine of which went to Sanders.
The 34,570 voters participating in the primary live in more than 170 countries around the world. Voting took place by fax, email, postal mail and in-person at select embassies over the first week of March.
Despite Sanders’ popularity among expats and his overwhelming win, Clinton is widely expected to win the nomination. She currently has 1,163 pledged delegates and 467 superdelegates, whereas Sanders has 844 pledged delegates and 26 superdelegates.
