Santo Domingo.- The country has a deficit of 2.1 millionhomes, of which 1.3 million must be built and 800,000 are in need of repairs.

However, the Public Sector Multi-Year Plan for 2013-2016 hadprojected reconstruction of only around 80,000, although its current version includesmodification on only 24,000.

The figure is just one fourth of the government’s proposal,or 75% below the 100,000-homes target pledged by president Danilo Medina.

Representatives of the Citizen Forum provided the figuresduring an interviewed by the Corripio media group,, as part of its promotion campaign"House Now" which seeks to ensure public access to decent and adequatehousing and basic services.

"This campaign is based on the right to adequatehousing established by the Constitution in Article 59 and the state must ensurethis guarantee," said Forum general secretary Alfonsina Cuesta, quoted byeldia.com.do.
