Santo Domingo.- Only 3% of the mostly Haitian foreigners who registered for the government’s program to regularize them have completed their paperwork, Interior and Police minister Carlos Amarante said Thurs.

He said of a total of 250,241 applications only 7,834 were completed, while 242,407 have yet to complete their files.

He said of 159,606 IDs approved, 148,669 were delivered, while of the 90,635 approved, 81,396 were delivered, for a total of 250,241.

The official said Haiti’s government is to blame if Haitian citizens haven’t completed their files, since it has to issue their documents and passports. “There are some actions that have been agreed upon by the Foreign Ministry and the Haitian Embassy, and an important number of passports has already arrived for the Haitian nationals.”
