US fruit & veggie ban means lower prices for consumers

Santo Domingo.- Many farm goods ready for export after the United States announced the ban when the fruit fly was detected have been placed in local markets, the head of the Dominican Agribusiness Board (JAD) revealed Sunday.

Osmar Benitez met with over the weekend with representatives from the Agriculture Ministry, major supermarket chains, hotels and other local and foreign companies to urge them to take a share of the excess production.

"The meeting was held at the Agribusiness Fair and there representatives of large supermarkets agreed to buy part of the products," he said, and affirmed that a company in Canada also wants those products. "The company will start receiving up to ten containers of avocados and peppers for the Canadian market starting Wednesday."

"We must be united to face this situation," Benitez said, adding that some supermarkets have the products at “very affordable prices.”
