Foreign technicians arrive to fight the fruit fly, EFE

Santo Domingo.- Agribusiness Board (JAD) president Osmar Benitez on Monday said eight technicians from Guatemala and two from the US will arrive in Dominican Republic today Tuesday to join the fight against the fruit fly detected in the east region last month, EFE reports.

He said the Agriculture Ministry has done the right thing to eliminate the fly in the area of Punta Cana, where the insect arrived from South America.

The pest prompted a temporary ban on Dominican fruit and vegetable imports to the US and a considerable impact on domestic producers.

Benitez added that Canada acquired more tan 30 containers of Dominican vegetables, and that the Turks & Caicos wants local fruits.
