The country can attract more Canadian tourists, dollars

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic has the conditions to attract more visitors and currency from Canada, its second most important market in tourists and exports, affirmed Canadian Embassy commercial attaché Aladin Legault on Tuesday.

He ??said Dominican Republic is Ottawa’s main trading partner nation in Central America and the Caribbean, and the fifth tourist destination in the world for Canadians, a position the diplomat says is consolidated year after year.

"What we’re seeing in recent years is that the Canadian who comes here for the first time is surely going to come back, and it’s something that will continue to grow."

Quoted by acento.com.do, Legault said that even with a population of only 10% that of the United States, Canada is the Dominican destination’s second biggest source of tourists.

Official figures reveal that 706,394 Canadians came to Dominican Republic last year, the diplomat said and noted the country’s potential to boost exports of farm products. "There’s also much potential in agribusiness, we have one crop a year in Canada…exports can increase because the harvest begins in September."
