RD$1.6M pact seeks to produce high yield tilapias

Tilapia

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Agricultural and Forestry Research Institute (Idiaf), the Agricultural Development Fund (FEDA) and the Dominican Fisheries and Aquaculture Council (Codopesca), on Tues. signed an agreement to produce and distribute improved fry of high yield tilapias, through associations of aquaculture projects financed by FEDA.

The agreement includes an investment of RD$1.6 million.

Miguel Reyes, Idiaf researcher and program coordinator, said tilapia reproduction poses technical problems in the Dominican Republic, such as females grow slower than males, early sexual maturation diverts energy from growth towards reproduction and unwanted offspring give rise to overpopulation, competition and cannibalism.
