Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Armed Forces (ERD) have confiscated 3,608 pounds of contraband garlic in two separate raids in the northwestern provinces of Dajabón and Montecristi.

The most recent seizure was carried out on Monday, when military agents, following a chase, managed to stop an SUV laden with 83 sacks containing 1,826 lb of garlic. The Army says that 81 sacks containing the remaining 1,782 pounds were seized last Sunday.

The vehicles and illegal merchandise were taken to the Army’s Fourth Brigade headquarters.

These confiscations are part of a campaign by the armed forces aimed at tackling activities that threaten national security and stopping the illegal trade in products that undermine the local economy.

Earlier this month, the Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Rubén Darío Paulino Sem led the deployment of 900 new soldiers to step up border patrols and control the flow of undocumented migrants, agricultural products, drugs, and weapons.
